Iran is considering relocating its capital from congested and smoggy Tehran to the coastal region along the Gulf, an ambitious plan to tackle the city’s urban challenges and boost the country’s sanctions-hit economy. Moving the capital has been a recurring discussion since the 1979 Islamic Revolution, but the proposals were repeatedly shelved due to financial and logistical hurdles.
